Welcome
Hello,
I am trying to figure out this blogging thing so I thought the best way to do it is to just start writing. Reading is my passion . . . as a teacher and as a person on the planet. “Getting lost” in a good book is high on my list of favorite things to do, especially if I have quick access to a healthy snack and a beverage.
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite classic stories mostly because of the character of Atticus. I find myself often secretly wishing he was real rather than fictional.
Chris Crutcher is one of the most honored young adult novelists, having won the prestigious Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Young Adult Services Library Association, an award from the Assembly on Adolescent Literature for significant contributions to young adult literature, and the Intellectual Freedom Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. Pretty amazing for a self-professed academic underachiever who often tells the story of how he read only one book—To Kill a Mockingbird—cover-to-cover during four years of high school.
In the more modern world, I enjoy murder mysteries and other detective /lawyer type stories. I enjoy the Spencer books- you gotta love paying $25.00 for so much white space – The Stephanie Plum series, The Detective Harry Bosch books, the Scarpetta stories, John Grisham and others along that genre.
I do ocassionally read more ’serious’ literature but mostly I try to keep up with books my students may read – right now I am working with 4th and 5th graders – there are so many great authors, old and new . . . Louis Sacher, Christopher Paul Curtis, Richard Peck, E. L. Konigsburg, Gary Paulson, Lloyd Alexander, Jean Craighead George, John Reynolds Gardiner, Betsy Byars, Beverly Cleary, Ann Cameron, Judy Blume, Andrew Clements, Gary Soto and many others . . . .
I look forward to hearing about other reader’s recommendations – favorite stories, characters and genres.
